Leadership Team


Pam Melbourne

Chief Executive Officer

Pam has worked in hospice care since 1990. Her professional goal is to increase knowledge of the benefits of hospice and end of life care to those who need services. Under Pam’s leadership Hospice of the Upstate has experienced growth in patient census and in the facilities available to patients, families and the community. Pam spearheaded the construction of a 4 million dollar dining, education and bereavement center completed in early 2006, the installation of the Meditation Gardens in 2007, the move to electronic medical records in 2008 and renovation of the Rainey Hospice House in 2012.

Pam demonstrates a passion for caring for staff and the patients and families in their care. She firmly believes that patients and families deserve exceptional care and that getting it right for patients and families is of the upmost importance.

Pam holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration from Emory University where she was a Woodruff Scholar. Pam is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nurses, has been honored by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and the Georgia Fifth District Georgia Nurses Association. She was in Leadership Anderson Class of 2005-2006 and has served on the board of directors of Anderson Rotary Club. Pam received the Athena Award from the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce in 2010. She was awarded the Emory University School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011, the Carolinas Center for End of Life Care Palmetto Award in 2013 and the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit Leader of the year in 2013. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Carolinas Center for End of Life Care.

Karen Workman

Chief Financial Officer

Karen Workman joined Hospice of the Upstate in 2005 as the organization’s Chief Financial Officer. Karen is a Certified Public Accountant with a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Western Carolina University. Her background includes previously serving as a financial consultant to hospice organizations throughout the United States. Prior to her work with hospice, she was a member of the Accounting Faculty at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Karen has a heart and passion for non-profit organizations and has served on several boards as a Director and Treasurer. As a member of the Leadership Team at Hospice of the Upstate, she helps to make sure that our resources are utilized most effectively, providing help and direction in planning for future growth.

Debbie Whitman

Director of Clinical Services

Anderson, South Carolina is where Debbie was born, raised, and continues to care for the community through her work with hospice. She has been a registered nurse for 28 years.  In 1993, her passion for end-of-life care began at Hospice of the Upstate.  After 12 years of service, she left Hospice of the Upstate.  For the next seven years, Debbie continued her work with hospice throughout the state of South Carolina in education, training, and regulatory compliance roles.  In November 2012, she returned to Hospice of the Upstate and presently holds the title of Director of Clinical Services.  Debbie completed her BSN in October 2014 and has over 21 years in hospice experience.

Dr. Hunter Woodall

Medical Director

Hunter E. “Woody” Woodall, MD is the second physician in South Carolina to achieve the status of Fellow in the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He has served as Medical Director for Hospice of the Upstate since 1998. He teaches at AnMed Health Family Medicine Residency here in Anderson and practices the full range of Family Medicine including obstetrics. His experience is shared with state and national audiences in publications and conference presentations. In addition to his hospice duties, Dr. Woodall sings to his patients and writes about many of them. He is a Presbyterian elder and enjoys motorcycling, chess, refereeing soccer, and choral singing.
